What is the Unexpected Benefit of Motorized Shades?

What is the Unexpected Benefit of Motorized Shades?

With summer here, you’re likely running the air conditioning whenever possible to beat the Texas sun. In fact, we know that the heat never truly leaves Texas no matter the time of year. As such, you may be looking for an energy-saving solution for your Dallas-Fort Worth area home. We’ve seen how efficient motorized shades can be in not just darkening a room, but also effectively cooling it down so that your climate control system doesn’t have to work so hard to cool down the space.

In this blog, we will look at a few design solutions that show how motorized shades can conserve energy in your home. Just keep reading to learn more.

Integrate Your Shades with Your Thermostat

For a full, integrated smart solution, coordinate your shades to work with your temperature control system. You can add sensors to any room, which will detect the space’s temperature and then communicate with your shades to close if needed to decrease the solar heat gain.

This reduces the need for your cooling system to run and use as much energy as it would otherwise.

Integrate Your Shades with Your Lighting

While your air conditioning system may use a lot of energy, your lighting and electronics also use a fair amount of energy as well that is worth taking into consideration. In fact, if you use the right resources, you can save both your climate-control system and your lighting from using up so much energy.

Using motorized shades in conjunction with your lighting system results in smart solutions that save you energy. It looks like this: rather than turning on lights in all of your rooms, schedule your shades to open at certain times of the day to let natural light in. If too much heat is entering the room, the sensors mentioned above will detect the solar heat gain and the shades will close while the lights turn on in conjunction. The light, though, doesn’t have to be at full brightness, using unnecessary energy. Instead adjust the lights to be dim or at any brightness that is suitable for the space.

Select the Right Shades

Ultimately, any smart solution you go with will be impacted by the type of motorized shades you incorporate into your home. For best results, solar shades are an excellent option for energy-savings.

Solar shades are intentionally-designed to block out the UV rays from the sun and ultimately keep your home cool. Moreover, these shades have a wide range of “openness factor” which is what determines how much you can see through the shade. As such, a shade with more “openness” means that you can see clearly outside while still blocking the heat from entering the room. A shade with less openness means less opportunity to see outside and in.

The variety of motorized shades allows for you to not only save on energy usage, but also customize the setup to get the benefits that you want.
