5 Questions To Ask About Home Security Systems

5 Questions To Ask About Home Security Systems

We know we should have some type of security system in our homes.  You need to have detection for smoke and fire of course.  You want to make sure intruders are deterred, and if one is detected that you and the proper authorities are alerted.  There may be other things you want to protect against so that small incidents don’t become expensive or catastrophic ones, like water intrusion or leaks.

While there are many home security system options now including DIY consumer products, there are some critical questions you should ask in evaluating what’s right for your home in the DFW area.

With that in mind, let’s dive into some key aspects to keep top-of-mind.

Wired and Wireless Capabilities

There’s an abundance of wireless technologies these days, and several are used in security systems.

In the past, almost everything was wired in a security system, from the sensors in windows and doors to the control panels and the way the security system communicates with the outside world.  Today, many sensors are wireless.  One fundamental question to ask is how do the sensors communicate wirelessly?  Does it depend on my home network?  Do those sensors require power from batteries or otherwise?

When it comes to managing the system, how does it communicate to remote monitoring?  Does that depend on a telephone line?  Can it communicate through the cell phone network?  If it can, is it based on today’s technology like LTE in our current smartphones?

A professional can explain the pros and cons of the wireless capabilities of any parts of the system they are recommending.

Battery Backup

If there is an extended power outage, is your house vulnerable?  If there is no power, will the system work at all?  A good system should have an integrated battery backup source with a battery that recharges itself and does not need frequent replacement.  The battery should report its condition as well should there be a need for maintenance.

Sensors Types

Are there sensors for carbon monoxide detection?  How about ones for excessive humidity or water intrusion and flooding?  Are there smart motion detectors that will not trigger false alarms from a pet?  Depending on what you want to protect against, ask if a proposed system incorporates all the features you may want.

Integration with Other Services

In today’s connected world, just having a system that only functions with itself is not as valuable – or future proof – as one that can connect with other services.  For example, a system that connects with a service like Alarm.com can provide a more comprehensive view of security monitoring around your property. From remote of reporting which entrances have been used to security camera triggers and to knowing whether your system is armed or disarmed, the capability to remotely access and manage your system dramatically increases its versatility – and also your peace of mind.

If you’ve invested in – or are considering – a home automation system, ask about the ability to integrate the security system with other home automation functions, like lighting and climate control.  These days, no system should be an island.

Resilience

How easy is it to disable the system? If the communication line is cut – like a cable or phone line – will we know it’s working?  Can it use a backup mechanism, like the cell network?  Is the system’s housing tamper-resistant, so someone inside the home can’t accidentally or willfully disconnect it?  No matter how sophisticated the features, the system should not be easily disabled inside the house.
